Food

The cuisine of Ladin valleys refers to the Tyrolean tradition, for instance speck “canederli”, i.e. bread dumplings with local smoked ham, or “strudel”. The mountaineers used to eat dairies, cereals, and broad beans. Barley was the most common cereal. Bread was baked twice in a year in the common oven right in the middle of “les viles”. Butter was the only one condiment. Many dishes are prepared following the old manner, such as PANICIA, BARLEY SOUP, TURTRES, CAJINCÌ, and APPLE FRITTERS.

Culture

OUR PEOPLE AND HER TRADITIONS
Life in the Ladin valleys was once characterized by hard work in the fields and forests. A typical feature of Val Badia is represented by LES VILES, e.g. agricultural core settlements about half way up the side of the valley facing South, occupied by several families. The settlements consist of a few farmhouses and barns with their essential rustic services, where the surrounding field and woods were worked together by the farmers. The most representative Viles are in Longiarü valley. Traditions and uses are handed down through generations. They are centred on religion and life rituals. People’s devotion is witnessed by the large number of processions, especially that one to the Sanctuary of Sabbiona near Chiusa. A thousand men take part in this procession every three years.

CRAFTSMEN AND ARTISTS
Economic and social conditions forced many men, the fathers of families, to look for a work away from home during the winter months. Wood carvers travelled throughout Europe to sell their wares. In Val Badia chests were made and alongside that artistic weaving blossomed. Even nowadays craftsmanship is essential to Ladin economics. Some jobs ceased to be carried out while other jobs begun alongside tourism development. Mutual cooperation between craftsmanship and tourism can be seen in the hotel sector. Here carpenters, decorators, weavers, painters and carvers have been able to adapt to a new working environment.
